History of WATERWater Theatre Company began in 1999 with their first production: Still/Waiting for Lefty, though a long history of collaboration preceded this official beginning. Early collaborations among Water members include Speed The Plow and Netotchka Nezvanova at the New Actors Workshop, The Julia Project and Motherland with Common Ground, Waiting For Lefty/Still Waiting at Theatre J in Washington D.C., Chekhov/A Circle of People at Strawdog Theatre and The Piven Theatre Workshop, and many others. Still/Waiting for Lefty, a show which juxtaposed the original, complete text of Clifford Odets' Waiting For Lefty, with the company's original material based on actual HUAC committee testimony, opened at the Tribeca Playhouse in March of 1999.Water's next production, Pilgrims was adapted from Elizabeth Gilbert's acclaimed book of the same name and grew out of a lengthy workshop process. Pilgrims played to virtually sold out houses at the Greenwich Street Theater in March and April of 2000, with continued runs at the Tribeca Playhouse in January and April 2001. Continuing its commitment to original works, Water staged a reading of the script "When Half Gods Go", written by Joe Roland, at the New Actors Workshop in November 2001. Water's most recent production, Baleville and Other Unknowns, performed at the New Actors Workshop in January 2002, was a collection of original works written by Shira Piven ("Certainty" and "Passengers") and Joe Roland ("Rough Draft"). Founding Water Company Members include actors Anne Hubbard, Spencer Kayden, Sheryl Moller, David Prete, Joe Roland, and Jen Wagman, Artistic Director Shira Piven and Managing Director Jessica Faith Ritter. |
